We are part of a team of published authors and illustrators, dedicated to children’s literature and to passing on our wealth of knowledge to both aspiring and established creators of children’s books.

We provide monthly writing workshops, manuscript critiques and general editing services.

SPRING WORKSHOPS 2007

This one-day writing workshop is designed to give aspiring writers a thorough overview of the process required to write a children’s book text, from conception of the idea to submission to publishers. Spring workshops run from 9:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.

MANUSCRIPT CRITIQUES

CReATe a kids’book USA will work with you to bring your manuscript to the standard necessary for submission to a publisher.

We provide a clear, thorough, and honest appraisal of your manuscript. Aspiring authors will find our experience, advice and editing services invaluable. As fellow authors, we know how difficult the path to publication can be, and we will act in a supportive manner to help you reach your goals.

Your manuscript critique will include an evaluation of the following, where relevant:

Character
Plot
Pace
Structure
Cohesiveness
Language style & dialogue

Suggestions on ways to develop your manuscript, its characters, plot and structure will also be included where required. Full line-by-line copy-editing is included in the cost of your critique, something not offered by most assessment services.

When Marlo and Dr. Virginia Lowe agree that your manuscript is ready for submission to a publisher, we may offer you a letter of recommendation. A letter of recommendation is not a guarantee of publication, but it is one of the few ways to get your manuscript out of the slush pile and into the hands of an editor at a publishing house. Please note that a letter of recommendation will incur an extra charge, and will only be provided at the discretion of Create a kids’book USA.

Picture book, text only (1000 words or less) (initial assessment)	$150
Reassessment of subsequent drafts.	$100
Chapter books/novels (up to 7000 words)	$200
Novels up to 25,000 words	$350
Novels over 25,000 words	price upon request

Ask about discounts on submission of multiple texts.
Urgent assessments can be completed within a week for a $40 surcharge.

SUBMISSIONS

CReATe a kids’book USA accepts submissions from the USA and Canada. For submissions from Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom etc., please visit our manuscript assessments page.

We quote a turnaround time of six weeks, as demand can be high; however, in most cases manuscript critiques will be returned to you within three weeks.

We prefer email submissions, with your manuscript saved as a Word document. If submitting your manuscript via post, please include a self-addressed, stamped envelope (SASE) for return of your manuscript.

Payment is required at the time of submission.

WHO ARE WE?

Marlo Garnsworthy, a member of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI), is an editor, author and artist who has spent many years learning the craft of writing. Aspiring authors will find her experience and advice invaluable.

It has been Marlo’s dream to write and illustrate children’s books since childhood, and she has been active in book creation and editing since 1996.

Marlo is the author of two children’s chapter books being published by McGraw-Hill, Dr Seuss, A Biography and Let’s Visit a Planetarium.

Marlo has exhibited and sold her artwork in the USA, Japan and her native Australia. Marlo works in watercolor, oils, acrylics, pencil and mixed media. She is currently studying Children’s Book Illustration at The Rhode Island School of Design (RISD).
